Canada’s total fertility rate in 2024 was 1.25 children per women. This means we have joined the company of nations like South Korea with “lowest of the low” fertility.

Motherhood remains the antithesis to mainstream modern values. We love our autonomy. But motherhood spelled correctly (at least in the early years) starts with a D for dependence. We love choices. While motherhood does not curtail choices, it so drastically changes the landscape for said choices that many young people cannot imagine what those choices might look or feel like.

Hardly a day goes by where there isn’t an article attempting to explain the Western world’s low and getting lower fertility rates.

Having children is intended to happen with social support, first from the father, who is more likely to stick around if he is married to the mother, and then from an expanding network: a village of the family’s choosing.
